Stevenage Turnback Facility 2020
The current infrastructure available for ECML Inner Suburban Services (Moorgate to Stevenage via Hertford Loop) provides insufficient capacity for the predicted growth in peak traffic beyond Control Period 5. The scope of work for the Stevenage project was to extend the existing Down Hertford Loop into Stevenage Station and provide a turn back facility serviced by a new single face Platform 5. The new platform will have an operational length of 129m which is sufficient to stable a 6-car unit, based on Class 717 rolling stock. In providing this facility, trains using the Hertford Loop will be able to de-train passengers at the station and then return without East Coast Main Line impingement. This new facility will alleviate current capacity issues and will enable inner suburban trains from London to turn around in reduced timescales.
The works were carried out in 8 stages with TICS construction works in all 8 stages.
Signalling Stage 1 – GSM-R mast move. New telecoms cable required for SSI datalink between its LDT and the GSM-R repositioned node.
Signalling Stage 2 – Down Slow/Fast HABD REB to move clear of the new Down Hertford foot print.
Signalling Stage 2B – To facilitate cable troughing work Signal, TPWS, Track and Point tail cables were renewed along with full recovery of all redundant TOWS cables.
Signalling Stage 3 – Track and signal tails affected by track lift works to be renewed at this stage.
Signalling Stage 4 – S&C stage to fit new IBCL and leave them C&P reverse OOU with no electrical drive.
Signalling Stage 5 – Full power stage to commission new FSPs and power up all new locations.
Signalling Stage 6 – (Jan 2020 – 50hrs) – Commission remaining new locations and associated cables and abolish existing cases. Lift and shift SSI Location D&I LDT location from into a position clear of new Down Hertford foot print. Existing point ends converted to MkII Clamplock.
Signalling Stage 7– (Feb 2020 – 51hrs) – Final commissioning and set to work of new crossover, new route from K939 signal, Down Hertford line and new Platform 5 controlled from York ROC.

All works with the exception of LB Foster for the Panel installation and Siemens for the ROC updates were carried out using our in-house TICS Design, Installation and Testing resources, coupled with dedicated project manager.
